Creative Shapes Etc. Case Study: Product Listing on Michaels MakerPlace
Client Overview
Creative Shapes Etc. is an established American brand with a long-standing presence in the educational products and arts and crafts industry. Founded in 1984, the company specializes in creative paper products, die-cut shapes, classroom essentials, and hands-on learning materials that support educators, students, and craft enthusiasts. With a diverse product portfolio spanning educational activities, seasonal crafts, and everyday creative projects, the brand serves a broad range of customer needs. Its extensive catalog and established market presence make it a notable name in the classroom supplies and creative materials segment.
Client Requirements
Creative Shapes Etc. wanted to expand its product presence to Michaels MakerPlace by listing products already available on Etsy. The primary requirement was to transfer the existing product catalog, prepare listings according to MakerPlace's format, and get the products approved and published.
Challenges
The project involved several challenges due to differences between the two marketplaces:
- Different Spreadsheet Formats: The product sheets downloaded from Etsy could not be uploaded directly to MakerPlace because the required column structure and data formats were different.
- Upload and Approval Issues: Initial uploads resulted in several products remaining in Draft status instead of becoming Active, requiring further investigation and manual processing.
- Additional Listing Requirements: MakerPlace required additional information, including categorization, inventory, dimensions, and other product details, to be completed within the platform before listings could be submitted for publishing.
- Large Product Catalog: Processing thousands of products required a reliable approach to minimize data errors, failed uploads, and repeated work.
Our Solution
Bluetech IT Services adopted a structured, manual listing workflow to ensure product information was properly formatted and compatible with MakerPlace's requirements.
1. Product Data Mapping and Formatting
We downloaded the product data from Etsy, reviewed the available spreadsheets containing 500+ and 1,900+ products, and mapped the existing information to MakerPlace's required format. Since the original files were incompatible, we prepared new spreadsheets rather than uploading the Etsy sheets directly.
2. Batch Uploads and Format Optimization
We began with the smaller product sheet, tested the upload process, reviewed failed listings, and adjusted the spreadsheet format based on MakerPlace's requirements. After validating the revised format through smaller batches, we continued processing additional products from the larger sheet.
3. Manual Listing Approval and Activation
After uploading the products, we identified that many listings were remaining in Draft status. We therefore began completing the additional information required within MakerPlace, including categorization, inventory, dimensions, and other listing details, before submitting products for publishing.
4. Prioritizing Draft Listings
As the project progressed, we adjusted the workflow to prioritize the existing Draft listings. The focus shifted to completing and publishing these products before moving on to the remaining products from the Etsy catalog.
Step 4 – Category & Attribute Configuration
Each product profile was configured according to Etsy's listing requirements.
This included:
- Category Mapping
- Materials
- Colors
- Sizes
- Variations
- Production Partner (where applicable)
- Shipping Information
- Other Required Etsy Attributes
Proper configuration ensured that listings met Etsy's requirements before publication.
Step 5 – Quality Review & Go Live
Before activating the listings, every product was reviewed to verify category assignments, product information, images, variations, and other listing details.
Once verified, the listings were successfully published on Etsy.
Project Results
-
1,287 Active Products: The client currently has 1,287 active product listings on Michaels MakerPlace.
